As Memorial Day approaches, our analysis finds that some military discounts on cars are worth less than half of what they used to amidst a broader cut in manufacturer incentives. That may translate to fewer deals for members of the military, retirees, and veterans as the country prepares to honor fallen service members.

In what could be the most noteworthy change, GM recently canceled Supplier Pricing for members of the military. Previously, you could score more than a $2,300 discount on a Chevy Silverado RST without having to haggle. Instead, the automaker is now offering just a $500 cash allowance on most cars & trucks.

Meanwhile, Hyundai's annual doubling of its $500 military discount simply hasn't materialized. The same goes for Honda, which doubled its $500 military appreciation bonus a year ago for the 4th of July. This could be disappointing for military members, who, like most car buyers, have been contending with higher prices.

Fortunately, not every brand has scaled back military discounts. For example, the Lexus Military Reward Program offers $1,000 in savings when financing or leasing a new vehicle through Lexus Financial Services (LFS). Expect a smaller $500 discount from brands like Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota, and just $400 from Kia.

As always, we recommend reading any fine print carefully. For example, companies like Toyota generally require you to finance or lease a car through its captive financing company, Toyota Financial Services, in order to get the deal. There may also be rules limiting your ability to combine promotional rates with rebates.
