What would it take to get you to switch from a hybrid to an EV? Nissan is hoping to put that question into the minds of select Toyota Prius owners this month with an unusual conquest incentive. The offer is meant to help spark interest in the 2016 Nissan LEAF, which features a larger battery on select models good for up to 107 miles of driving. So who's eligible? Is the offer any good? And what are this month's deals? Here's what you need to know.

Deal details

Official program documents reveal Nissan is offering a special conquest offer worth $1,000 targeting Toyota Prius owners this month. A select group of owners are being given a unique authorization code that can be used toward the purchase or lease of a new Nissan LEAF.

Both 2015 and 2016 versions of the LEAF are eligible, including the latest version with its larger 30 kWh battery. The offer is limited to one per individual.

For those who aren't looking to completely replace their Prius, there is no stated requirement to trade-in your current vehicle. There's also some flexibility since Nissan is allowing transfers to family members residing at the same address.

Current offers are set to expire February 1, but there are indications that the program may run through March 31.

Is it a good deal?

By itself, a $1,000 discount isn't much when it comes to the LEAF these days. Fortunately, Nissan is also offering 0% APR for 72 months plus a $3,500 finance bonus. However, discounts really get impressive if you're looking to lease.

Did you know the 2016 LEAF S currently has up to $10,000 in lease discounts? This comes from a $9,300 in standard lease cash plus a $700 bonus added earlier this month. Amounts on the better-equipped trims are slightly less, but still impressive.

If you opt for the SV or SL models, you'll be looking at discounts worth up to $9,800 and $9,700, respectively. Interestingly, the SV and SL have smaller base discounts than the cheaper LEAF S but have a larger bonus worth $1,050 that helps offset the difference.

Our take

Current offers on the LEAF signal a strong effort by Nissan to boost interest in the 2016 model. The conquest program is quite unusual since we rarely see automakers target a specific competitor. It's also odd since the LEAF and Prius generally appeal to different drivers.

Will the extra money be enough to get a Prius owner to flip to a LEAF? Maybe not. But the offer may make the most sense for those looking to add a LEAF to their garage for themselves or a family member.

Those lucky enough to receive the offer will want to carefully consider their driving habits before making a decision. But considering there are now versions of the LEAF capable of driving up to 107 miles, the car may be a more viable alternative than it was before.

Editor's Note 1/25: An earlier version of this article stated that only the 2016 LEAF was eligible for the promotion. However, Nissan has since updated the incentive to include the 2015 model as well. We have updated the text accordingly.
