March 18, 2013

A drivers license in the State of Texas expires every six years which is why a Texas drivers license renewal is important. Driver license renewal can be done by phone, mail, online, or by a visit in person to the Driver License Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety. A driver's license is an official document that permits an individual to operate a vehicle such as trucks, cars, bus, and motorcycles. Texas, like some states in the US conduct tests for applicants.

Requirements

To renew a Driver's License, an individual Social Security Number, valid credit card and current Texas Driver's License or Identification Card are required. Only a drivers license due to expire within one-year from the age the license was last issued can be renewed.

The state of Texas doesn't usually give grace periods upon the expiration of a driver's license, which is why it is extremely important to always renew a driver's license before expiration. There is usually notification six weeks before the expiration of a driver's license.

Mode of Driver's License Renewal

As stated before, Texas driver's license renewal is possible via mail, telephone, online, or a traditional in-person visit to the Driver's License Division. There are some restrictions to online driver's license renewal though, which concerns eligibility, making physical presence a requirement. Below are steps and various ways Texas Driver's licenses are renewed.

In Person

  • First, one has to be in the office at:

Texas Department of Public Safety, 5805 North Lamar Blvd. Austin, Texas 78752-4422

  • At the office, applicants are required to pass a vision test. A driver' license fee is charged. For example, a person of 18 years of age or older but less than 84 years of age is required to pay $24. Senior citizens above 84 years of age pay a little bit less, $8. Under 18 years of age pay the lowest, $5. One must have an old driver's license or any proof of ownership before they can renew their old driver's license. Social Security Number is also required.

Phone

To get a license renewed, a person must have a driver's license that has not yet expired or will be within a year. In addition, the applicant must do the renewal on the phone themselves. Some digging into an applicant driving history to see if a person doesn't hold a commercial driver's license will be carried out. The applicant must be a Texas Resident, and in the event of any change of name, only official changes are accepted.

The number to call is (866) 357-3639. An applicant needs a credit card for the renewal fees, and Social Security Number. The driver's license must not have expired for more than two years.

Mail

All applicants must meet the entire eligibility requirement as stated above. There are special programs that allow people to renew their account by mail. Registered names and vital information such as Social Security Number would need to be sent with the application. You can emai license.issuance@txdps.state.tx.us or better still, call (512) 424-2600 for further inquiry. To renew by mail, send all letters to the Texas Department of Public Safety address listed above.
