Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2022 Genesis GV80 Overview

William Kinton
Automotive Editor - January 12, 2022

What's New

After last year’s introduction, the Genesis GV80 returns as the luxury brand’s largest SUV. While there have been no major changes made to the GV80 for its second year outside of some minor trim-level reshuffling, it still retains the impressive display of technology, luxury, and standard active safety features that made waves throughout the automotive industry when it debuted.

Choosing Your Genesis GV80

Genesis offers three trim levels for the 2022 GV80. These trims include the Standard, Advanced, and Prestige which start at $51,245 (including destination fees) for a Standard model equipped with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder and rear-wheel drive and range up to $73,745 for the 3.5-liter V6-equipped Prestige. The GV80 is positioned above the GV70, a smaller luxury SUV.

Engine Choices

There are two engine options available across the three trims, including a 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. Both offer enough power to get the large SUV moving, but the V6 feels much more excited about the task when requested.

Both engines route power through an eight-speed automatic transmission with various driving modes like Comfort, Eco, and Sport. Rear-wheel drive is the base configuration for the four-cylinder engine with optional all-wheel drive for a $5,900 premium, but all V6-powered models come standard with AWD.

3.5L Twin-Turbo V6375 hp391 lb-ft20 mpg$4,500

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

Most GV80 models come with enough seating for five, but the Advanced+ package available on the Advanced trimmed models equipped with the V6 adds a third row, increasing total seating to seven.

Rear legroom is generous in the GV80 at nearly 39 inches, but the rear seat offers only 30 inches. Cargo space is also generous, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row, and a cavernous 84.0 cubic feet with the second row folded flat.

Safety Features

The GV80 is one of the best-equipped luxury SUVs on the market today in terms of safety features. Sporting a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS and a full five stars overall from NHTSA, it is one of the safest vehicles on the road in the event of a collision.

Its full list of standard advanced safety features is also impressive. All models come with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, an advanced version of adaptive cruise control that uses machine learning to drive like the GV80’s owner, lane-keeping assist, rear emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, and top-notch LED headlights. Most other luxury brands keep these must-have features locked behind four-figure option packages, but Genesis has included them all as standard.

Connectivity

The heart of the GV80’s infotainment system is a 14.5-inch touchscreen that features minimal physical buttons, a decision that brings joy to some but can baffle others. Instead, inputs are given via a rotating push-knob and a writing pad. While it looks great, it may take users a long time to figure out how to operate the system without thought.

That said, it is still loaded with tech features, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and various cloud-based services that will charge subscription fees. Further information can be presented with an optional 12.3-inch digital instrument display that can be customized as the driver requires.

GV80 Standard - MSRP From $51,245

The Standard GV80 comes well equipped with what you would expect from an SUV in its class. The Standard gets synthetic leather, 12-way adjustable heated front seats, the aforementioned 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, and dual-zone climate control. However, features like rain-sensing wipers, a hands-free power liftgate, and a fancy automatic-adjusting suspension put it ahead of most rival’s base models.

Selecting all-wheel drive adds more features, including a heated steering wheel, wireless device charging, and ventilated front seats, while opting for the V6 will also give you 20-inch wheels, and a panoramic sunroof.

GV80 Advanced - MSRP From $55,245

The Advanced trim brings a good amount more to the party, including the features added by AWD in the Standard Trim, a rear occupant alert system, and a 110V AC Power outlet in the second row. Basic piano black trim has been replaced with matte-finished wood, and the standard 12-speaker audio system has been replaced with a Lexicon 21-speaker system.

AWD on the Advanced Trim adds real leather, 20-inch wheels, parking assist, and a 360-degree camera. Stepping up to the V6 in the Advanced trim unlocks the option for the Advanced+ package, which adds the third row, a blind-spot monitor, and the Ergo Motion Seat designed to reduce driver fatigue.

GV80 Prestige - MSRP From $60,645

The Prestige trim adds all of the features from the Advanced AWD, as well as the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, the Ergo Motion Seat, three-zone climate control, and heated second-row seats. Selecting AWD nets you a heads-up display and several comfort features like electronic adaptive suspension and active noise cancellation. V6 models receive Nappa Leather, soft-close doors, and even larger 22-inch wheels.

This V6 version of this trim also offers the $1,500 Prestige Matte package which adds matte paint with matte chrome trim and ventilated second-row seats. All told, you’ll be spending $76,745 for a GV80 fully outfitted at the Prestige Matte level.

CarsDirect Tip

We still think the most bang for your buck is with the Advanced trim with the 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder and rear-wheel drive. While the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 adds some noticeable power, the GV80 is made for cruising, not racing. The 2.5-liter should suit most buyers perfectly.
