Sharper Exterior Design. Kia knocked the Stinger’s design out of the park when it introduced the upscale sedan in 2018. We didn’t think the Stinger needed an exterior refresh, but Kia gave it one anyway.

For 2022, the Stinger arrives with a sharper design, though not a lot changes. The LED headlights and taillights are new, while the Stinger also benefits from updated LED daytime running lights. Kia has also updated the Stinger’s wheels and exhaust outlets for the new model year. A new Scorpion Package arrives for 2022, bringing black exterior trim pieces, dark exhaust tips, a rear spoiler, and carbon-fiber interior trim.

Long, low, and muscular, the Stinger looks like South Korea’s version of a sports sedan. Compared to other options in the compact luxury segment that play it safe, the Stinger swings for the fences and nail s its bold design.

More Powerful Engines. Kia has updated the Stinger’s lineup of engines for 2022. There’s a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. It’s one of the more powerful standard engines in the class and delivers stronger acceleration than the majority of other four-cylinder engines in the segment. Kia claims the turbo four can help propel the Stinger to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and we’re inclined to believe that claim.

While the twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 engine in the Stinger remains the same as last year, it arrives with 368 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. The V6 engine is a star, shooting the Stinger off the line in 4.7 seconds and delivering addictive performance.

The Stinger’s suspension remains the same going into the new model year, which isn’t a bad thing. Most of the Stinger’s competitors offer sharper handling, but the sedan still delivers enjoyable handling. The compact car enjoys tackling corners and has responsive steering. The GT trims bring more performance features like Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, and variable-ratio steering for a sharper feel.

Despite these additions, the Stinger never feels buttoned-down when being pushed hard. When tackling corners on a windy road with imperfections, the sedan has a loose rear end that can make it tricky to drive.

Simplified lineup. For 2022, you’ll only find three available Stingers to choose from: the GT-Line, GT1, and GT2. To go along with the new lineup, Kia has made a few noteworthy changes to the sedan.

Instead of a seven-inch touchscreen, the Stinger now comes with a standard 10.25-inch unit, nine audio speakers, and navigation. The new 10.25-inch touchscreen covers more real estate on the dashboard and helps the vehicle feel more in line with some of the other high-tech options in the segment.

Kia has also added more standard safety features to the Stinger’s roster of equipment. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, a driver attention monitor, and safe exit alert are standard. These features build upon last year’s list that included rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear parking sensors.

Thanks to the changes, the Stinger is an even better value option than before, with a starting price tag of $37,365 with destination.

High-Quality Cabin. Against luxury vehicles from Germany, the Stinger doesn’t come with the same upscale materials or cutting-edge features, but it does have a familiar design that looks nearly as high-end. The simple dashboard design that has three circular vents gives the Stinger’s cabin a minimalistic look.

Additionally, passengers don’t pay the price for the Stinger’s striking exterior design. The sedan falls in between the compact and midsize segment in terms of size, resulting in a spacious cabin. While the roofline looks sporty, the Stinger still offers a generous amount of headroom. Legroom is even more plentiful with 36.4 inches of space in the back. Thanks to the Stinger’s hatchback design, the vehicle has 23.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place – a generous amount for the segment.

With supportive seats, a large number of adjustments for the front seats, and a large amount of space, the Stinger has a comfortable cabin. From a family vacation to a solo road trip, the Stinger can handle it all.

Final Thoughts. The 2022 Kia Stinger is another vehicle that highlights just how far the South Korean automaker has come. With near-premium levels of luxury, a generous list of standard features, and impressive performance, the Stinger stands out for more than just its value proposition. The Stinger is a unique vehicle in the class and stands out because of its unique qualities.

The Genesis G70 shares a lot of components with the Stinger, but has a more premium cabin and high-tech features. The BMW 3-Series is a traditional luxury sedan that has athletic handling, powerful engines, impressive tech features, and a roomy interior.
