Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2021 Land Rover Defender Overview

John Diether
Automotive Editor - January 26, 2021

What's New

The 2021 Land Rover Defender gains an X-Dynamic trim with adventuresome styling elements. The two-door Defender model enters its first full year of production with additional trim choices.

The current Defender debuted last year after a decades-long absence from the U.S. market.

Choosing Your Land Rover Defender

The four-door Defender 110 is available in six trim levels: Defender, S, SE, X-Dynamic SE, X-Dynamic HSE, and X. Pricing starts at $51,525 including destination and goes to $84,025 for the X.

The two-door version, dubbed Defender 90, ranges from $47,125 to $81,525. Trim breakouts below are for the four-door Defender 110.

Engine Choices

The Defender and S are powered a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. All other trims carry a six-cylinder hybrid setup.

Engine TypeHorsepowerTorqueMax TowingFuel Economy (Combined)
2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder296 hp295 lb-ft7,716 pounds18 mpg
3.0L 6-Cylinder Hybrid395 hp406 lb-ft8,201 pounds19 mpg

Every Defender comes with four-wheel drive with low range, a terrain selector, an adaptive air suspension with height adjustment, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Defender starts out as a two-row SUV with room for five adults. The available front bench seat ($900) boosts capacity to six. The Defender 110 can get a two-person third row at no cost for seven-passenger capacity. Three-row models come only with individual front seats.

The 110 can accommodate 34 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, and a generous 80 cubic feet with it folded. Note the optional third row reduces these figures slightly. Owing to its rugged design, the Defender has a manual swing-out tailgate with spare tire mount.

The Defender 90 rides on a shorter wheelbase, so cargo capacity drops to 15.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 58 cubic feet with it folded.

Safety Features

The Land Rover Defender makes a strong showing when it comes to driver assistance safety technology. Every model gets a surround-view camera, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a driver alertness monitor, front and rear parking sensors, speed limit assist, safe exist assist, and front automatic emergency braking. Standard wade sensors alert the driver when the vehicle is approaching its maximum wading depth of 35 inches. Adaptive cruise control is a $1,200 standalone option.

Upgrading to the S brings automatic high beams. The SE adds a review camera mirror and an available head-up display ($970). The X-Dynamic HSE also gets adaptive cruise control as standard. All of these features are included in the X.

Connectivity

The base Defender carries a 10-inch touchscreen, six speakers, satellite and HD radio, navigation, two front USB ports, wi-fi capability, wireless device charging, a 12-volt outlet in the cargo area, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

The SE gets a 10-speaker Meridian sound system and a 12.3-inch interactive driver information display. The X-Dynamic and X trims add a rear tablet mount with integrated USB port. A 14-speaker Meridian system is optional on the X-Dynamic HSE ($450) and standard on the X.

Defender - From $51,525

The Defender starts out with a cloth interior with power reclining front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, a universal home remote, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Exterior gets auto-leveling LED headlights, LED taillights, rear fog lights, automatic wipers, heated side mirrors with driver side auto-dimming, and 18-inch steel wheels in gloss white.

Heated front seats cost $500, and heated second-row seats can be added for another $500.

The Comfort and Convenience Pack ($900) adds the 10-speaker Meridian system, ambient interior lighting, and a refrigerated compartment in the center console. There's also a Cold Climate Pack ($700) with a heated windshield and washer nozzles, a heated steering wheel, and headlight washers.

For enhanced performance in the wild, the Off-Road Pack ($1,550) furnishes an electronic active differential and all-terrain tires. The Advanced Off-Road Capability Pack ($750) tacks on low-speed cruise control, an automatic terrain-sensing system, and individual terrain settings for the powertrain, steering, differentials, and traction control.

S - From $54,825

The S provides a handful of key upgrades, including leather upholstery, front seat manual lumbar adjustments, and 19-inch inch alloy wheels. A panoramic sunroof becomes available for $1,800.

SE - From $63,725

Along with the hybrid V6 engine, the SE offers 12-way power front seats with memory, signature headlights, front fog lights, and 20-inch wheels. The Comfort and Convenience Pack drops to $600 since the Meridian system is already standard.

X-Dynamic SE - From $66,525

This trim combines the SE features with a more rugged appearance. The X-Dynamic SE wears body-color door handles, a silver grille with matching front and rear skid plate pans, dark grey wheels, exposed rear tow hooks, and illuminated metal door sill plates.

X-Dynamic HSE - From $72,625

The HSE goes further into luxury territory with upgraded Windsor leather upholstery, 14-way ventilated front seats, and unique satin grey wheels. The panoramic sunroof is standard.

X - From $84,025

The most capable Defender comes standard with the Off-Road Pack, Advanced Off-Road Capability Pack, and Comfort and Convenience Pack. Interior upgrades include extended two-tone Windsor leather upholstery, a power-adjustable steering wheel, standard heated second-row seats, and rough-cut walnut trim. The exterior gets a black roof, a gloss black hood, orange brake calipers, and satin chrome trim.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2021 Land Rover Defender's off-road credentials are indisputable at every trim level. For mixed use, we recommend advancing to the mid-level SE for its potent hybrid engine and brand-appropriate level of luxury. The upper trims offer unique looks and features, but are harder justify from a cost standpoint.
