2023 Land Rover Defender

There are five trims available: Standard, S, SE, X-Dynamic SE, X, V8, and Carpathian Edition and base prices range from $53,050 to $115,950.

While the standard trim is now limited to the four-door model, expect to pay about $3,000 more to step up to the 110.

The Defender offers three engine choices while a permanent four-wheel-drive system is standard. The six-cylinder incorporates a 48-volt electrical system and small battery pack for extended engine-off periods and acceleration assist that allows it to deliver improved fuel efficiency despite its significant power advantage.

The Defender is available in two sizes, 90 and 110. The Defender 90 is 180.4 inches in length, has two doors and seats up to five whereas the Defender 110 is 197.6 inches long and wears four doors, and can seat up to seven with the optional third-row as part of the Family Pack ($2,100 plus other required packages). Both models are about 79 inches wide and 78 inches tall. Expectedly, rear legroom shrinks from 39 inches in the 110 to 36.6 inches in the two-door, and cargo room drops from 34 cubic feet behind the second row to 15.6 cubic feet and from 78.8 cubic feet with the rear seat folded to 58.3 cubic feet.

The Defender 90 and 110 are both rated for towing up to 7,716 pounds.

All Defenders are equipped with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot assist, rear cross-traffic monitor, and traffic sign recognition. Adaptive cruise control is optional for $1,200 and is standard on the X trim and above. The S trim adds automatic high-beam assist.

The Defender has not been rated by IIHS or NHTSA.

The Defender features an 11.4-inch touchscreen with an updated infotainment system that incorporates Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, and HD Radio and offers WiFi through an Online Pack with Data Plan for $360.

The base trim, only available as a four-door, features 18-inch steel wheels, LED headlights and taillights, heated power-folding mirrors with approach lighting and auto-dimming for the driver’s side, black roof rails, parking sensors, proximity entry, heated fabric seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a seven-inch driver’s information display, a surround-view camera system that can “see” through the hood and measure wade depth, a two-zone climate control system, and rain-sensing wipers.

There are several desirable feature packages that can be added too such as the Off-Road Pack ($1,500) that adds a locking differential, off-road tires, and an AC power outlet, the Cold Climate Pack ($700) that includes a heated steering wheel, washer fluid, and windshield, and headlight washers, and the Air Suspension Pack ($1,600) which features adaptive dampers, automatic headlight leveling, and an air suspension system that can lower the Defender two inches and raise it nearly six inches. The Air Suspension Pack is required before ordering the Advanced Off-Road Capability Pack ($750) with all-terrain progress control and an updated terrain-based traction control system with an individual-setting mode, the Towing Pack ($1,850) that includes the features of the Advanced Off-Road Capability Pack plus Advanced Tow Assist which aids with steering when reversing a trailer, and the Family Pack.

The S trim includes 19-inch alloy wheels, leather-trimmed seats, a mid-level Meridian Sound system with 10 speakers and 400 watts, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The roof panel can now incorporate a glass panoramic sunroof for $1,800 or a sliding fabric cover for $2,200. The key option packs are also offered.

The SE trim features 20-inch wheels, upgraded LED headlights with signature daytime running lights, front fog lights, a panoramic sunroof, leather seats with heating and ventilation, 12-way power adjustability for the front row, ambient lighting, and an upgraded sound system that packs 15 speakers and 700 watts.

The X-Dynamic builds on the SE trim and adds a few cosmetic touches such as a black contrast roof, satin silver front and rear skid plate garnishes, grille bar, and badging, 20-inch dark gray wheels, and a black interior with upgraded leather seating surfaces.

The X trim adds more content and style to the X-Dynamic trim with 20-inch wheels with dark gray pockets, satin chrome front and rear skid plate garnishes and badging, orange brake calipers and recovery hooks, darkened taillights, a gloss black hood, air suspension, and the Advanced Off-Road Pack. Inside, there are more panels that are wrapped in premium leather, 14-way power-adjustable seats with tan and black surfaces, a power-adjustable steering wheel, a dark gray finish for the dash panel, rough-cut walnut trim, and a digital rearview mirror.

The V8 trim gains 22-inch satin dark gray wheels, quad exhaust outlets, and is offered in white, black, and gray exterior colors. The dash panel is coated in a satin black finish and the seats and steering wheel gain microfiber surfaces.

The Carpathian Edition maintains a focus on on-road performance and style with gray exterior paint with a satin protective film, a locking rear differential with torque vectoring that helps with powering out of corners, gloss black 22-inch wheels, gloss black brake calipers, and a black contrast rear door.
