Expert Rating
Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

2021 Land Rover Discovery Sport Overview
Matthew PilgrimAutomotive Editor - April 2, 2021What's New
Choosing Your Land Rover Discovery Sport
There are two trim levels offered as the base and the HSE trims from last year have been dropped leaving the entry-level S trim, priced from $42,950, and the SE trim, priced from $46,400
Engine Choices
The Discovery Sport is available with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine, designated P250, that is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission which sends power through a standard all-wheel-drive system that features plenty of low-grip and terrain-specific programs - something one would rightfully expect in a Land Rover. Its overall efficiency is behind the pack, however, with an EPA-estimated 19 miles per gallon city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 combined. The Discovery Sport is rated for a maximum tow load of 4,409 pounds.
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The Discovery Sport stretches to 181 inches in length which is several inches shorter than its competitors from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, as is its 108-inch wheelbase. However, that didn’t stop Land Rover from fitting the Discovery Sport with an optional third-row seat that increases its passenger capacity from five to seven. Skip the third-row seat, and the cargo area offers 27.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 55.6 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded which are good numbers for the class. Rear (second-row) passengers will also appreciate the Discovery Sport’s efficient packaging as they receive 38.1 inches of legroom and 38.7 inches of headroom.

Safety Features
Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane keep assist are included as standard active safety features and a surround-view camera system and front and rear parking sensors are on-board to help minimize the risk of low-speed parking incidents. The S trim offers blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert through the $625 Blind Spot Assist Pack and adaptive cruise control can be fitted with the Driver Assist Pack for another $1,325. The Blind Spot Pack is standard on the SE trim. The Discovery Sport has not yet been rated by IIHS or NHTSA.
Connectivity
The Discovery Sport receives Land Rover’s latest infotainment system which is equipped to receive over-the-air updates and is controlled through a 10-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen. It includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, HD radio, and multiple USB ports while Wi-Fi and wireless phone charging are offered for $360 and $350, respectively. A 12-speaker 400-watt Meridian sound system is available for $350 in the S trim and the SE trim can further the experience with a 14-speaker, 650-watt sound system featuring Meridian’s 3D Tri-field technology for $800.

Since dropping the base trim, the S takes on the entry-level role. It includes notable standard features such as 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, power-folding heated mirrors with auto-dimming on the driver’s side, leather seating with a 12-way power driver’s seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Among the long list of optional packages are the Black Exterior Pack that adds gloss black mirror housings, grille, front and rear lower fascia, and license plate surround for $600, the Cold Climate Pack ($625) with its heated steering wheel, heated windshield wipers, and a heated windshield, the Hot Climate Pack, which includes a cabin-air purification system and additional vents for rear passengers ($900), and the Technology Pack for $1,700 that bundles the rearview mirror camera display, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a head-up display. Several of the stand-alone features include proximity entry for $550, heated seats for $500, a power tailgate for $350, and a $1,300 fixed panoramic glass roof.
The R-Dynamic styling package ($1,700) adds sharper styling to the front and rear bumpers, gloss black exterior trim, leather seats with red stitching, a perforated leather steering wheel, and a black headliner.
The SE trim’s relatively small price bump includes significantly more standard features such as premium LED headlights with auto-leveling, automatic high-beam assist, a power tailgate, 20-inch wheels, and a memory position driver’s seat. Many of the S trim’s optional packages are also offered in the SE although the Premium Upgrade Interior Pack is newly available for $1,300 and includes ambient interior lighting, premium carpet floor mats, a full leather steering wheel, and illuminated door sill plates.

CarsDirect TipThe SE trim offers a better value with its additional safety, technology, and convenience features, however, there are still several optional features that one might rightfully think should already be included at this price level.
