After introducing a single version of the new RC series coupe for 2015, Lexus offered four distinct varieties for its second season, including this base model. Instead of a V6, the RC 200t is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, borrowed from the IS 200t and the bigger NX 200t. Priced below the other RC coupes, the RC 200t serves as the “entry-level” edition. Offered only with rear-wheel drive, the RC 200t has the same sporty, assertive aura as its RC 350 and RC 300 companions, led by the signature Lexus spindle grille and L-shaped daytime running lights.
What's New for 2017
Standard equipment now includes a Scout GPS Link. Triple LED premium headlights now are optional for the F Sport and the Luxury Package. The base grille gets a black finish, while 18- and 19-inch wheels have revised finishes.
Choosing Your Lexus RC 200t
Like the more powerful RC 300 and RC 350 coupes, the RC 200t isn’t easily identified as a Lexus, apart from its familiar grille. Rather than a V6, the RC 200t holds a turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. An RC 350, in contrast, is rated at 306 horsepower; the RC 300, at 255 horsepower.
Every RC 200t has an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, whereas the RC 300 comes only with all-wheel drive and the RC 350 is offered both ways. The standard Drive Mode Select system can select Sport, Eco, or Normal. Fuel economy is estimated at 22 mpg in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway (26 mpg combined).
Base
Standard equipment in the four-cylinder RC 200t is similar to that of the V6-powered RC 300 and RC 350, including NuLuxe simulated leather seats. Five-spoke alloy wheels hold 18-inch tires. LED headlights and taillamps are standard, along with Bluetooth phone connectivity, a 60/40 split-folding back seat, sliding front center armrest, a backup-camera monitor with dynamic gridlines, and tilt/telescopic steering wheel.
Lexus Enform Service Connect allows remote viewing of vehicle information. The 10-speaker audio system features a 7-inch display screen, HD and satellite radio, voice recognition, and compatibility with Apple Siri EyesFree. Also standard are power front seats, dual-zone climate control, paddle shifters, and new Scout GPS Link.
Pricing starts at $41,130 (destination charge included). Options include 19-inch wheels, a moonroof, navigation system, and front/rear park assist. The $2,990 Luxury package includes perforated leather-trimmed seats, rain-sensing wipers, heated/ventilated front seats, and a power tilt/telescoping steering column, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. For $1,240, the Premium package provides the heated/ventilated seats and blind-spot monitor. The Navigation package includes a Remote Touchpad, voice command, Enform Destinations, and a DVD/CD player. A 17-speaker, 835-watt Mark Levinson premium audio system also may be added.
For safety's sake, you can separately add a pre-collision braking system with radar-based adaptive cruise control, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
F Sport
For those who seek more aggressive styling, the performance-oriented F Sport package comes with unique 19-inch wheels, LFA-inspired instruments, high-performance brakes, heated/ventilated front seats, aluminum pedals, blind-spot monitor, and specially-tuned F Sport adaptive variable suspension. Ardent enthusiasts could add a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential as well as orange brake calipers and a performance exhaust system. An RC 200t F Sport provides some of the benefits of an RC F model, but at $46,335, it’s priced almost $19,000 lower.
As the lowest-priced member of the RC coupe family, the RC 200t delivers the same sporty demeanor as its V6-powered cousins, as well as similar road behavior. Price differentials between the three versions are modest; but a spirited turbo coupe can provide just as much driving pleasure as a comparable V6 model, if not more. Of course, enthusiasts with $64,000 or so to spend could opt for that track-ready, V8-powered RC F.
