Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Preview

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Model Preview

With the midsize vehicle set to enter the market for its third model year since the update, we think changes to the 2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will be minor. Mercedes-Benz gave the E-Class a mid-cycle update in 2021.

The 2023 E-Class is expected to be available in sedan, coupe, wagon, and convertible body styles. The midsize E-Class should continue to share the same overall exterior design with the model that’s currently on sale. Regardless of body style, the E-Class has a restrained exterior design with simple lighting, smooth lines, a tidy grille, and a rounded rear end. Even the AMG E53 is subdued as far as past AMG models go.

On the inside, the current E-Class has an elegant design. The curvy dashboard features circular air vents, two prominent displays that are integrated into the dashboard, and an elongated center console. Seating capacity in the E-Class wagon maxes out at seven people, while the coupe and cabriolet can seat five. The sedan offers seating for up to five. Cargo capacity ranges from 9.5 cubic feet of space in the convertible and up to 64 cubic feet of total space in the wagon. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class should have the same interior design as the current E-Class that’s on sale.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Interior

Mercedes isn’t expected to make any changes to the E-Class’ list of tech features for 2023. The current model comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, navigation, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto as standard equipment. Available features include a Burmester audio system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a wireless charging pad, gesture controls for the infotainment system, and rear USB ports.

We expect Mercedes to offer three different engines with the 2023 E-Class. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower. A turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine is available and is rated at 362 hp. The AMG E53 comes with a more powerful version of the six-cylinder engine that produces 429 hp. All engines come paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available.

Standard safety features with the current E-Class include pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, a driver drowsiness monitor, blind-spot monitoring, and car-to-x communication. Available safety features include adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view parking camera, traffic sign recognition, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, park assist, a head-up display, and evasive steering assist. These features should continue to be available for the 2023 model year.

Pricing & Release Date

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will start at $56,800 with destination. The midsize vehicle can be ordered now. We expect the E-Class to arrive at dealerships this fall.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will compete against the Genesis G80, Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Lexus ES, and Volvo S90.
