Since its official debut in 1972, the S-Class has served as the flagship sedan for Mercedes-Benz. In 2005—the debut year for the model's W221 generation—Mercedes added a BlueTEC variant to this exalted lineup. In doing so, the German automaker introduced a fuel-efficient and eco-friendly diesel option that didn't adversely affect comfort and performance.

Except for making 2012’s Premium 2 option package a standard feature, Mercedes-Benz has brought the handsomely-styled S350 BlueTEC into 2013 unchanged.

Under the hood, a 3-liter V6 diesel engine produces 210 horsepower and a whopping 455 pound-feet of torque. This engine incorporates an oxidizing catalytic converter, a particulate filter, an SCR converter and a NOx storage system to keep harmful emissions as low as possible. Fortunately, all this eco-friendliness doesn't interfere with the sedan's mileage ratings of 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, or its respectable 7-second sprint to 60 mph.

A seven-speed automatic transmission features two overdrive ratios—these keep cruising rpm low and enhance peak highway fuel economy. A paddle-shift interface involves the driver in the shifting process when desired. And standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive provides excellent traction.
