The 2020 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is back for one final model year before a 2021 redesign. It sees no major changes, but Mercedes is still sending off the current generation with a bang. For 2020, the SL-Class is available in an exclusive Grand Edition, which is mostly an aesthetic upgrade.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.
3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.
2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.
1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.
2020 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Overview
Choosing Your Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
The SL-Class comes in just two trims: SL 450 and SL 550. Prices start at $91,995 including destination for an SL 450 and climb to $115,695 for an SL 550. As of this writing, the 2020 SL isn’t available in the usual 63 AMG or 65 AMG guise.
The two engines of the SL-Class delineate the two trims – the SL 450 gets a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6, while the SL 550 utilizes a more powerful 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8.

Both engines use a nine-speed automatic transmission and are only available with rear-wheel drive. Neither trim is particularly fuel efficient, but that was never the point, was it?
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
Passenger and cargo capacity are also not the point of this sporty convertible. The SL-Class only seats two, and the trunk only opens up 13.5 cubic feet of space. Even that drops to 8.5 cubic feet with the roof down.
The SL-Class comes with Mercedes-Benz's typical helping of active safety tech. Standard features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor.
Blind-spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control are available on both trims through the $2,250 Driver Assistance Package.
The SL-Class still uses Mercedes’ older COMAND system instead of the MBUX system that has replaced it elsewhere. It still gets Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice control, and navigation, all running through a 7-inch screen. Regrettably, this display isn't a touchscreen, requiring users to make inputs via a central controller.
Although it’s the cheaper of the pair, the SL 450 doesn't skimp on luxury. The seats are upholstered in leather, heated, and power-adjustable with memory settings. The wheels are 19-inch alloys, audio is handled by Harman Kardon, and the suspension has adaptive dampers. A fully adaptive suspension is available as a $4,090 option.
If you like to keep the roof down even in chilly weather, Mercedes-Benz's neck heating system is available as part of a Premium Package ($4,100) that also includes ventilated seats, massage-capable seats, and parking assist.
If you’d rather keep the roof raised, Mercedes has a unique feature they call “Magic Sky Control” ($2,500), which turns the roof into a glass panel that can become either opaque or transparent.
Most of the extra money in the SL 550’s starting price goes toward the engine. The twin-turbo V8 nets an extra 87 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque, dropping the car’s 0-60 mph sprint to 4.3 seconds.
The SL 550 includes the features of the Premium Package as standard, but otherwise its options are the same as the SL 450. Soft Nappa leather is an extra $1,900, and a 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio system costs $5,400.
Although the V8 is impressive, the V6 has plenty of grunt and better suits the cruiser personality of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. If you’re looking for something more hardcore, the AMG GT roadster is just down the row.
