2022 Mitsubishi Outlander

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander receives its first total redesign in nearly a decade. The latest Outlander looks dramatically different from all angles, especially the front, where a chrome-bracketed grille and body-color headlights pods usher in a new design language for the brand. The body is slightly longer and wider than before, not to mention significantly stronger.

Inside are upgraded materials, a horizontal dashboard, and flatter-folding rear seats that boost cargo capacity to the top of this class. Newly available features include a terrain selector, a head-up display, fully digital instrumentation, and 20-inch wheels. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder serves as the new Outlander engine. Note that Mitsubishi has opted to skip the 2021 model year.

The 2022 Outlander comes in five trim levels: ES, SE, SE Launch Edition, SEL, and SEL Launch Edition. Pricing starts at $26,990 including destination and goes to $36,540 for the SEL Launch Edition.

Every 2022 Outlander comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. The standard continuously variable transmission (CVT) can be set to mimic the shift pattern of an eight-speed automatic.

All-wheel drive costs $1,800, except on the SEL Launch Edition, where it's standard. Otherwise, front-wheel drive is the default. The standard driving mode system offers five settings: Eco, Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, and Snow. AWD models also get a Mud mode. The new Outlander is EPA-rated at 24 miles per gallon city, 21 mpg highway, and 27 combined. With AWD, fuel economy estimates ease to 24/30/26 (city/highway/combined).

The Outlander remains one of the few compact crossers with three rows. Although the third row is the domain of children, it does boost seating capacity to seven. With all rows in use, cargo space is limited to 11.7 cubic feet. Folding the third row opens up 33.5 cubic feet. With both rows down, load space balloons to 80 cubic feet. That makes the new Outlander one of the most cargo-friendly compact crossovers you can buy. The revised folding mechanisms on the rear rows take the credit.

Every Outlander comes fully equipped for safety. Standard driver assistance features include front automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and rear automatic emergency braking. Moving up to the SE or SEL brings adaptive cruise control and active lane-keeping assist. A 10.8-inch head-up display is exclusive to the SEL Launch Edition.

The ES offers an 8-inch touchscreen, six speakers, two front USB ports, satellite radio, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android. The SE picks up a 9-inch touchscreen, navigation with speed limit info, HD radio, two rear USB ports, and wireless phone integration and charging.The SE Launch Edition and SEL trims add a 10-speaker Bose sound system to the mix.

The ES is outfitted with dual-zone automatic climate control, power driver seat lumbar controls, LED headlights, a 7-inch driver info display, and 18-inch alloy wheels. AWD models also carry headlights washers and wiper de-icers.

The SE adds a number of conveniences, including heated side mirrors, automatic wipers, a hands-free power liftgate, heated front seats, LED fog lights, proximity key access, and an eight-way power driver seat. The interior features synthetic leather upholstery with sueded inserts and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The SE rolls on 20-inch two-tone wheels.

For just $1,150 more, the SEL Launch Edition adds a panoramic sunroof and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display.

The SEL gains a genuine leather interior with heated second-row seats, driver memory, a four-way power passenger seat, tri-zone climate control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The sunroof and digital instrumentation are standard as well.

AWD is standard on the SEL Launch Edition, along with an upgraded semi-aniline leather interior, a heated steering wheel, rear sunshades, and the head-up display.
