Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2022 Nissan LEAF Overview

Matthew Pilgrim
Automotive Editor - September 17, 2021

What's New

The 2022 Nissan LEAF gains additional standard features and charging capability but is most notable for what it loses, about $4,000 to $5,000 depending on trim, compared to last year’s model.

Choosing Your Nissan LEAF

The Nissan LEAF is available in three trims. The base S trim starts at $28,375 while the top-tier SL trim is $38,375. Those prices are significantly less than last year’s model and the LEAF still qualifies for the $7,500 federal tax credit.

Engine Choices

The LEAF is available with two powertrains. The base 40 kWh lithium-ion battery is matched with a 110-kW electric drive motor that delivers 147 horsepower, but more importantly, 235 pound-feet of instantaneous torque.

Its range of 149 miles may be a deal-breaker for some consumers, but Nissan also offers a larger-capacity 62 kWh battery pack that extends the range to 226 miles (215 miles in the SV and SL trims). That “PLUS” powertrain is also fitted with a more powerful motor for a system output of 214 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque.

In the right conditions and with a DC fast charging station, the LEAF can be charged to 80% in about 45 minutes. Although, with a more typical 240-volt charger, the base battery pack requires eight hours to fully charge, and the 62 kWh system will need 11.5 hours.

The most efficient version, according to the EPA, is the 40 kWh battery pack version which achieves a 111-miles per gallon-equivalent rating. That dips to 104 MPGe in the SV PLUS and SL PLUS trims, making it less efficient than the Chevrolet Bolt or Hyundai Kona EV.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The LEAF’s compact exterior extends to 176.4 inches and can carry five passengers. Rear-seat occupants are afforded 33.5 inches of legroom and the cargo area is rated at 23.6 cubic feet which expands to 30 cubic feet with the 60/40 split seats folded.

Safety Features

All LEAF trims are equipped with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection with automatic braking, lane keep assist, and automatic headlights with high beam assist. The SV trim adds adaptive cruise control and offers the ProPilot driving assist, which coordinates lane centering and adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system.

The LEAF earns a 5-star rating from NHTSA and receives Good crashworthiness scores from IIHS.

Connectivity

The base trim is equipped with an 8-inch central infotainment display and can connect with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM. There are four speakers onboard and four USB ports report for charging duty.

The SV trim adds two additional speakers, navigation, and NissanConnect telematics which can be used to remotely connect and start the HVAC system.

LEAF S – MSRP From $28,375

The S trim is basically equipped and includes 16-inch steel wheels, proximity entry, cruise control, a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, variable intermittent wipers, driver’s side window express up, folding rear seats, automatic temperature control, and a digital gauge cluster.

The S PLUS, with its larger battery pack, adds $5,000 and is further fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels and the CHAdeMO quick-charging port.

LEAF SV – MSRP From $29,775

The mid-level SV trim features 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, heated exterior mirrors, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel, and a rapid interior heating system.

The optional $1,490 Technology Package includes the additional active driving assist technology, LED headlights, signature daytime running lights, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink.

The SV PLUS is $3,600 more than the SV and newly includes the Technology Package.

LEAF SL PLUS – MSRP From $38,375

The top trim is only available with the 62 kWh battery pack and includes all of the features of the SV PLUS and adds leather seating, integrated turn signals in the exterior mirrors, and a Bose 7-speaker sound system.

CarsDirect Tip

The LEAF is a great value at all trims and the SV PLUS trim strikes the best balance of good EV range and advanced features.
