Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2021 Nissan Titan XD Overview

William Kinton
Automotive Editor - November 23, 2020

What's New

The 2021 Nissan Titan XD is in its second year after a major refresh where it received more power, a new nine-speed automatic transmission, and a standard suite of driver assistance safety features.

This year, little has changed. The only notable one is upgrades to its frame that allow for increased towing capabilities.

Choosing Your Nissan Titan XD

The Titan XD is offered in five trim levels: S, SV, PRO-4X, SL, and Platinum Reserve. Pricing starts at $46,625 including destination for the S and climbs to $63,905 for the top-tier Platinum Reserve.

Engine Choices

There's one engine choice for the Titan XD: a 5.6L V8 that's also found in the standard Titan. It makes 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque; a nine-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive are standard.

The Titan XD doesn't get rated by the EPA, but the heaviest standard Titan manages a combined fuel economy rating of 17 miles per gallon, so you can expect to be somewhere in that ballpark.

The Titan XD is capable of towing 11,040 pounds, which is more than the standard Titan’s max load of 9,310, but still not as much as higher-end models of the Ford F-150, and is blown out of the water by true heavy-duty trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD or Ford F-250.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Titan XD comes in only Crew Cab configurations that can fit either five or six passengers, depending on the trim. The S and SV feature a three-seat bench, while the higher trims receive very comfortable captain’s chairs with a conventional center console. The interior is overall very roomy, and the majority of humans won’t feel cramped.

In terms of cargo, the Titan XD is equipped with a 6.5-foot bed with 60.4 cubic feet of room and a payload capacity of 2,240 pounds.

Safety Features

All Titan XDs receive the Nissan Safety Shield 360 driver assistance suite with desirable features like front and rear automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring.

If you spring for a trim above the base S model, you’ll also get adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic alert, while PRO-4X and higher models get front parking sensors and traffic sign recognition. The SL and Platinum Reserve get a surround-view camera, which is helpful for parking in tight spots.

Connectivity

The Titan XD comes standard with an 8-inch infotainment screen, while a 9.0-inch screen is available when the truck is equipped with the Integrated Command Center. The Integrated Command Center is available for an extra fee in the SV trim and as standard equipment in the PRO-4X trim and above.

All models get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, Bluetooth, two front USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, and wi-fi capability. The PRO-4X and higher also come with navigation, two rear USB ports, and a 12-speaker Fender audio system.

S - From $46,625

The most basic Titan XD is the work-truck special, with 17-inch wheels, power windows, cloth seats, and easy-to-clean vinyl flooring. It does get two nifty features though for a base trim truck: push button start and automatic headlights.

SV - From $50,365

Moving up to the SV offers several big upgrades, including 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, LED headlights, skid plates, front tow hooks, LED taillights, and an integrated hitch. It brings carpet floor mats, stain-resistent cloth seating, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster to the interior.

The SV also has access to the $2,780 Convenience Package, which includes the Integrated Command Center as previously detailed, remote start system, a leather steering wheel, heated front captain’s chairs, an eight-way power driver's seat, and dual-zone climate control.

PRO-4X - From $56,115

The PRO-4X is the off-road model of the lineup, equipped with performance Bilstein mono-tube off-road shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, and hill descent control to help accomplish the task. The PRO-4X is also differentiated with unique exterior styling and is the first trim to receive the Integrated Command Center as standard.

The PRO-4X Convenience Package adds heated rear seats, remote start, leather seats with memory functions for the driver, and a remote trailer light check for $3,390.

SL - From $60,665

The SL starts to feel much higher end than the previous trims, with leather-appointed seats, a premium audio system from Fender, It also gets wood trim inside, 20-inch wheels, remote start, heated front seats, a four-way power passenger seat, and memory settings for the driver's seat, steering wheel, and side mirrors.

A two-pane panoramic moonroof is a $1,490 standalone option, while 20-inch black wheels are available for $1,290.

Platinum Reserve - From $63,905

The ultimate luxury rendition of the Titan XD is the Platinum Reserve, which includes dark-painted 20-inch wheels, premium leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, two-tone paint, a unique front grille, and running boards.

However, even at this price, there are still features locked behind a hierarchy of options, starting with the Platinum Reserve Utility Package that adds in-bed storage options and a bumper step for $1,390.

CarsDirect Tip

If you’re looking for a luxury truck, skip the 2021 Nissan Titan XD Platinum Reserve. The added upgrades are mostly cosmetic, and you still have to pay for the moonroof separately. The value is much better at the SV trim level.
