2013 Porsche Panamera Hybrid Overview

After a short courtship as a concept car, the Porsche Panamera arrived in dealerships for 2010. Just two years later, Porsche once again stepped out of its traditional boundaries to release a hybrid variant: the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid.

2013 marks the second year of production for the Panamera S Hybrid, and its relative youth means it is largely carried over from 2012. The Porsche sedan pairs a 333-horsepower 3-liter V6 with a 47-horsepower electric motor to produce a combined 380 ponies and 428 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed transmission delivers power to the rear wheels. Despite its relatively thrifty 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, the Panamera S Hybrid hits 60 mph in only 5.7 seconds and has a top speed of 167 mph.

On top of a stunning exterior and an overachieving powertrain, the Panamera also handles just like a Porsche should, thanks to an aluminum suspension—double-wishbone up front and multi-link at the rear. Stabilizer bars and Porsche's stability management help keep the Panamera stuck to the road under hard cornering.

With a base price in excess of $96,000, the Panamera S Hybrid costs more than a non-hybrid Panamera S that rips off a 4.6-second run to 60 mph while still getting a respectable 16 mph city and 24 mpg highway. Is the hybrid system truly worth an extra 4 mpg city and 3 mpg highway? For those who value reduced CO2 emissions and respectable performance in an eco-friendly sports sedan, the answer is probably yes.
