What Country Do These Famous Car Brands Originate From?

Along with fellows Audi and BMW, Mercedes forms one arm of the German luxury trio. With a long history of deluxe cruisers, Mercedes has a wide lineup including stars like the S-Class sedan and GLS-Class SUV.

Mazda is one of several smaller automakers based in Japan, along with compatriots like Mitsubishi and Subaru. The brand made its name on zippy economy cars like the Mazda3, but it found further success with utility vehicles like the CX-5 and sports cars like the MX-5 Miata.

British brand Land Rover is responsible not only for the legendary Defender, but also the luxury offerings from Range Rover. In 2013, Land Rover merged with Jaguar to bring British luxury under one roof.

Volvo is one of the biggest companies in Sweden, enjoying a global reputation for sophistication and safety. Recent releases like the XC series have brought the brand attention as a fresh competitor in luxury segments. Sub-brand Polestar will soon be producing high-end electric cars to compete with the likes of Tesla.

Infiniti is the luxury arm of Japanese brand Nissan, but its been headquartered in China since 2012. Infiniti makes upscale vehicles based on the architecture of Nissan’s mainstream vehicles, just like Acura and Lexus, the luxury divisions of Honda and Toyota, respectively.

Although Chrysler is still one of the American “Big Three,” the brand merged with Italian company Fiat in 2014. The global alliance controls such brands as Dodge, Jeep, and Maserati, which means that some of the parts in Jeep SUVs can also be found on Italian sports cars.

Hyundai and sister brand Kia are both based out of Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Hyundai has found success in North America with feature-packed models at low starting prices, even spinning off its own luxury division in Genesis Motors.

American marque Lincoln has a long history, helping to invent the luxury coupe with the 1940 Lincoln Continental. As the luxury division of Ford, Lincoln competes closely with Cadillac as well as imported brands. Recent releases like the Navigator and Aviator have earned praise for their sharp designs and comfortable interiors.

Porsche’s legacy of German performance may have begun with the Volkswagen Beetle, but it transformed into the Porsche 911, one of the most successful sports cars in history. Along with Audi, VW, Bugatti, and even Lamborghini, Porsche falls under the umbrella of the Volkswagen Group.

Another subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler, Alfa Romeo has its headquarters in Turin, Italy. Once known for its coupes and convertibles, Alfa Romeo now competes alongside luxury brands with models like the Giulia and Stelvio.
