Wide appeal. One of the best things about the 2022 RAM 1500 is how it appeals to a wide range of consumers. Want a simple work truck that doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles? Stick with the Tradesman that has vinyl flooring and seats, 18-inch steel wheels, and a modest five-inch touchscreen. If you prefer a pickup truck with a luxurious side, the Limited comes with power-deployable running boards, a massive 12-inch touchscreen, premium leather upholstery, and four-corner air suspension.

We also can’t forget about the TRX. At the time of writing, it’s the baddest pickup truck on sale and is built to hit obscene speeds over rough terrain. It has one of the most powerful engines in the segment, offering up to 702 horsepower from a supercharged V8 engine. Nothing, not even the Ford F-150 Raptor, can match the TRX.

Regardless of what you’re looking for from a full-size pickup truck, there’s a RAM 1500 out there for you. For 2022, RAM has come out with six special editions for the 1500, giving consumers even more options to choose from.

Four stout engines. In addition to offering a wide range of trims for the RAM 1500 lineup, RAM also has four capable engines for consumers to choose from. For towing capacity, the diesel engine is the way to go, though it’s a pricey upgrade. Unlike its competitors, the RAM 1500 is available with electrified powertrains, but none are full hybrids.

The standard engine in the RAM 1500 is a 3.6-liter V6 engine with a 48-volt system. As far as base engines go, it’s a fine engine for daily use and to tow with occasionally. It’s rated at 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque and offers up to 7,730 pounds of towing capacity. The next step up is a 5.7-liter V8 that’s available with and without the 48-volt eTorque system. The V8 produces 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque and carries a towing capacity of 11,610 pounds.

For the best towing capacity, there’s the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. It’s a $4,995 upgrade but brings 395 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. These figures are good enough to tow 12,560 pounds. It’s also the most fuel-efficient powertrain of the bunch with a combined fuel economy rating of 26 mpg.

The off-roading TRX trim is equipped with one of the most powerful engines in a pickup truck. Its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine is rated at 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. It helps the pickup get to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds while having a towing capacity of up to 8,100 pounds. While this engine is rated to get up to 12 mpg combined, you’ll have trouble seeing double digits and fuel costs will be outrageous.

One of the most comfortable pickups. RAM doesn’t offer the 1500 in a Regular Cab body style, which highlights its upscale, comfortable-forward character. The pickup truck is only available in Crew Cab and Quad Cab body styles. For the majority of people, the Quad Cab offers plenty of space for up to six people. If you plan on regularly using the rear seats, the Crew Cab is the better choice, bringing some of the most spacious rear seats in the segment.

Thanks to rear coil springs that are standard on the pickup truck, the RAM 1500 offers a surprisingly smooth ride for a full-size pickup truck. Other pickups have leaf springs that can become jittery on-road, but that’s not a problem the RAM 1500 has. For an even more composed ride, the RAM 1500 is available with four-corner air suspension that does an even better job of ironing out imperfections on the road.

Combine the RAM 1500’s ride quality and spacious cabin with its high-end materials and the truck really does feel like a luxury product. The fanciest trims are offered with a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated seats, genuine wood trim, and premium leather upholstery that rival luxury vehicles. For 2022, there’s a new Limited 10th Anniversary Edition that has an exclusive Blue Shade paint job, genuine wood trim, metal trim, quilted leather seats, a unique Indigo and Sea Salt Gray interior color scheme, metal pedals, and a unique shifter center cap.

Updated infotainment system. RAM has updated the 1500’s infotainment system for 2022. Big Horn trims and above now come with Uconnect 5 that’s four times faster than the previous infotainment system and has three times more memory. The new system also includes tow-specific navigation and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

There’s a wide range of infotainment systems on the RAM 1500. An entry-level five-inch touchscreen is a basic unit with only a handful of features. The available 8.4-inch touchscreen is a more impressive unit and brings smartphone compatibility. We recommend moving up to the 8.4-inch touchscreen and using it as the base setup over the five-inch unit. RAM was one of the first to offer a massive touchscreen on a full-size pickup truck with its 12-inch unit. It’s a massive screen with great graphics, quick response times, and intuitive menus.

Where the RAM 1500 falls behind the competition is with its safety features. Every single advanced safety feature is optional, as only a rearview camera is standard. While the pickup truck is available with a lengthy list of options safety features, you’ll have to spend a lot of money getting all of them.

Final thoughts. Full-size pickup trucks have come a long way on the comfort, luxury, and technology front and we have the RAM 1500 to thank for that. The pickup was one of the first to move upscale and incorporate high-tech features into the cabin. The 2022 RAM 1500 continues to be comfortable and high-tech while being capable. The available TRX model can’t be matched by any other pickup on the market, offering serious off-roading capability and sports car performance.

Alternatively, the Ford F-150 has followed in the RAM 1500’s footsteps by going upscale and focusing on technology. It has the most towing capacity of any full-size truck in the segment and is available with a full hybrid powertrain. It doesn’t ride as well as the RAM 1500.

In more recent news, the all-new Toyota Tundra is available with a 14-inch touchscreen, a full hybrid powertrain, and an extensive list of standard safety features. It doesn’t have the same towing capacity as the RAM 1500 or the same high-end interior, but has a bold design and a powerful standard twin-turbo V6.
