Expert Rating

Not Available

Unlike other websites and magazines, our ratings are not based solely on a singular road test, but rather a more encompassing batch of criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value. When comparing vehicles using our Rating System, it's important to note that the rating earned by each vehicle correlates only to the models within its class. For example, a compact car cannot be compared to a SUV—They are different vehicles altogether.

You can interpret our ratings in the following way:

5-Star: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.

4-Star: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

3-Star: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

2-Star: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.

1-Star: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

2021 RAM 2500 Overview

Joel Patel
Automotive Editor - February 11, 2021

What's New

Not much changes for the 2021 RAM 2500. There’s a new Limited Night Edition that features 20-inch black wheels, grilles, and badges. Monochromatic designs are also included with the new model.

Beyond the new Limited Night Edition, the RAM 2500 continues to be an incredibly capable pickup truck that can be fitted with luxury features befitting a high-end luxury vehicle. Cutting-edge technology also makes it easier than ever before to tow with the RAM 2500. Few pickups on the market are as capable, comfortable, or as high-tech as the RAM 2500, making it a standout choice in the segment.

Choosing Your RAM 2500

RAM offers the 2500 in six trims: Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Power Wagon, Limited Longhorn, and Limited. Prices start at $35,790 including destination and go up to $66,230.

Like the majority of pickup trucks on the market, the RAM 2500 is offered in multiple configurations to suit your specific needs. The Regular Cab body (two full-size doors) is available only on the Tradesman and Big Horn trims. RAM also offers a traditional Crew Cab body (four full-size doors) on every trim level. The extra-large Mega Cab body is available with the Big Horn, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and Limited.

When it comes to bed sizes, RAM offers three bed sizes. The Regular Cab and Crew Cab bodies are available with 8-foot beds. The Crew Cab and Mega Cab body styles are also offered with a 6-foot-4-inch bed.

Engine Choices

RAM offers two stout V8 powertrains with the 2500. For the majority of consumers, the standard 6.4-liter V8 provides plenty of grunt for towing. For those that need even more capability, a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine is offered for an additional $9,400 on every trim beside the Power Wagon.

Engine TypeHorsepowerTorqueMax Towing CapacityMax Payload
6.4L V8410 hp429 lb-ft17,540 pounds4,010 pounds
6.7L 6-Cylinder Turbodiesel370 hp850 lb-ft19,780 pounds3,160 pounds

With heavy-duty pickup trucks like the RAM 2500, towing is the name of the game. When properly equipped, the Ford F-250 can tow up to 22,800 pounds, while the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD has a maximum 18,500-pound towing capacity. To get the maximum towing capacity out of the RAM 2500, you have to opt for the Regular Cab, 8-foot bed, the diesel engine, and rear-wheel drive.

The standard 6.4-liter engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 6.7-liter diesel engine comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while four-wheel drive is available for $2,900. The Power Wagon trim comes with four-wheel drive as standard.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

Depending on what body style you choose, the RAM 2500 comes with a three- to six-passenger layout. With the Regular Cab, the pickup has one row of seats for three passengers. Both the Crew Cab and Mega Cab are available with five- or six-passenger seating.

Space in the RAM 2500’s bed is plentiful, especially with the larger bed. With the 8-foot bed, consumers get 75 cubic feet of cargo space, while the 6-foot-4-inch bed has 57.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

Safety Features

For a full-size pickup truck, the RAM 2500 comes with a strong list of safety features, though all of them are optional. The available Safety Group costs $2,890 and brings adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, and lane keeping assist. Depending on trim level, the Safety Group can cost as little as $1,990.

Connectivity

Unlike traditional heavy-duty pickup trucks, the RAM 2500 can be equipped with cutting-edge tech features. The Tradesman trim comes with a 5-inch touchscreen running RAM’s Uconnect system, two USB ports, four audio speakers, and Bluetooth. Moving up to the Laramie trim brings an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 4, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and a nine-speaker Alpine audio system. The 8.4-inch infotainment system is available on the Big Horn through the Level 2 Equipment Group package that costs $4,890.

The Limited Longhorn can be fitted with a 12-inch touchscreen, navigation, a wireless charging pad, and a 17-speaker Harman Kardon audio system for $3,695 with the Longhorn Level 1 Equipment Group. These features are standard on the range-topping Limited trim.

Some trim levels have an available Towing Technology Group package that costs $1,095. The package brings trailer reverse guidance, a surround-view camera, and a cargo-view camera. These features should make it easier for drivers to tow large cargo.

Tradesman – From $35,790

The RAM 2500 may be able to be fitted with upscale features, but the entry-level Tradesman is as barebones as heavy-duty pickup trucks come these days. Manual windows and door locks are standard, which is a good indicator of just how entry-level the trim is. Other standard features include 17-inch steel wheels, urethane bumpers, a vinyl bench seat, and manual climate control.

There are quite a few available packages for the Tradesman trim. The Tradesman Level 1 Equipment Group adds heated exterior mirrors, remote keyless entry, and power windows. The package costs $995. For more amenities, there’s the Tradesman Level 2 Equipment Group that’s priced at $1,695. The package includes all of the equipment from the Tradesman Level 1 Equipment Group, but adds a rear sliding window, cloth upholstery, and satellite radio.

Big Horn – From $42,615

The Big Horn adds some pizzaz to the pickup truck with chrome bumpers, a chrome grille, 18-inch chrome wheels, remote keyless entry, and cloth upholstery. Power-folding, heated mirrors are also standard.

The Heated Seats and Wheel Group costs $445 and brings heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Level 1 Equipment Group is one of two large packages. It adds 18-inch wheels, a cloth bench seat, dual gloveboxes, fog lights, power-adjustable pedals, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and power-folding mirrors. The package costs $2,095. A Level 2 Equipment Group package is also available, bringing a lot of the same features as the Level 1 package, but adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, parking sensors, a remote-start system, and a universal garage door opener. The Level 2 package is priced at $4,890.

Laramie – From $51,330

The Laramie brings all of the features found on the Big Horn’s Level 2 Equipment Group package as standard. Other standard features include 18-inch aluminum wheels and LED interior lighting.

The Laramie Level 1 Equipment Group brings more standard safety features, second-flow storage bins, power-adjustable pedals, rain-sensitive windshield wipers, a remote tailgate, and ventilated front seats. The package costs $1,900. A $4,195 Laramie Level 2 Equipment Group is available, bringing a 17-speaker audio system, heated rear seats, and the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen.

Consumers seeking a more stylish Laramie trim can opt for the $2,495 Night Edition package. It adds black exterior trim pieces, 20-inch black wheels, and larger tires.

Power Wagon – From $55,230

Unlike the other RAM 2500 trims, the Power Wagon trim isn’t built for towing, but for off-roading. It comes with 33-inch all-terrain tires, front and rear locking differentials, Bilstein shocks, a 12,000-pound winch, and an electronically-disconnecting sway bar.

When it comes to features, the Power Wagon builds upon the Big Horn’s list of equipment, with cloth upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen, and six audio speakers.

The PowerWagon Level 1 Equipment Group costs $1,895 and adds power-adjustable pedals, second-row in-floor storage bins, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a universal garage-door opener, and a remote-start system. The PowerWagon Level 2 Equipment Group has all of the equipment from the Level 1 package, but adds an alpine audio system, automatic high-beam assist, a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated rear seats, leather upholstery, LED interior lighting, rain-sensitive windshield wipers, and keyless entry.

The $11,715 75th Anniversary Edition package adds a lot of the same features as the Level 2 package, as well as a Harman Kardon audio system, 17-inch bead-lock capable wheels, a 12-inch touchscreen, and leather upholstery.

Laramie Longhorn – From $58,775

The Laramie Longhorn brings some luxurious touches over the Laramie. Leather upholstery, heated rear seats, navigation, heated and ventilated front seats, chrome running boards, and a southwestern motif.

There’s only one major optional package for the trim. The $3,695 Longhorn Level 1 Equipment Group brings a Harman Kardon audio system, power-deployable running boards, a 12-inch display, and a wireless smartphone charger.

Limited – From $63,330

The range-topping Limited trim has luxury features that rival a high-end European sedan. Leather upholstery, wood and aluminum accents, power running boards, 20-inch wheels, a 12-inch touchscreen, and dual-zone automatic climate control are standard.

Choosing the $4,035 Limited Level 1 Equipment Group adds more safety features, along with a digital rearview mirror and a Harman Kardon audio system. The Limited trim is also available with a Night Edition package that brings black exterior trim pieces, tow hooks, painted bumpers, and 20-inch black wheels.

CarsDirect Tip

We recommend sticking with the popular 2021 RAM 2500 Laramie trim. It’s well equipped and with the Level 1 Equipment Group, the pickup has a good blend of tech and comfort features. With up to 17,540 pounds of towing capacity, the base 6.4-liter V8 engine is plenty powerful enough. Few consumers will need to upgrade to the diesel engine.
