2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek Overview

John Diether
Automotive Editor - January 19, 2015

The Subaru of compact crossovers, the XV Crosstrek comes off as rather edgy for this family-oriented class. In addition to its adventurous styling, you get light off-road capability and even a manual transmission if you want it. Although it can do everything you expect of a crossover, the XV Crosstrek seems more at home hauling bicycles and dogs rather than kids and groceries.

What's New for 2015

The XV Crosstrek receives a new base trim level and enhanced standard equipment across the board.

Choosing Your XC Crosstrek

If you haven't driven a Subaru in a while, you might be surprised by quality of the XV Crosstrek's interior. It still has a no-nonsense way about it, but the materials are a cut above those used in earlier Subaru crossovers. Five passengers fit without issue, and there's up to 52 cubic-feet of cargo space. That's definitely on the small side, but the flat load floor makes the area seem bigger.

The standard 2-liter four-cylinder engine is good for 148 horsepower and comes with your choice of a five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic (CVT) transmission. Every XV Crosstrek gets all-wheel drive. The system used on CVT-equipped models sends most of the engine power to the front wheels under normal operating conditions, while the standard setup distributes power equally unless slippage is detected.

The XV Crosstrek is now offered in three trim levels:

Comes with the manual transmission and all the basic conveniences for this class, plus a rearview camera, rear privacy glass, roof rails, alloy wheels, Bluetooth phone and audio, and a four-speaker touchscreen sound system with Internet radio compatibility.

2.0i Premium

Adds the CVT option, heated mirrors and several interior upgrades: heated front seats with an adjustable center armrest, a cargo cover, a removable cargo tray and a six-speaker audio system. The available EyeSight system provides useful safety technology such as adaptive foglamps, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and frontal collision mitigation with automatic braking. EyeSight comes bundled with a premium sound system featuring a 7-inch touchscreen and HD and satellite radio. A sunroof is available as a standalone option.

2.0i Limited

Gets the CVT and upgraded audio system as standard, plus a leather interior with ambient lighting and a rear center armrest, automatic headlamps, upgraded instrumentation and automatic climate control. A navigation system is available in a bundle that also gives you a sunroof and keyless access and ignition. A second bundle include all that, plus EyeSight.

CarsDirect Tip

The XV Crosstrek is one of those vehicles that make the most sense in loaded form. For all its extra features, the Limited still comes in at under $25,000, a hands down bargain in our view.
