2022 Volvo XC90

Beyond now coming standard with navigation, the 2022 Volvo XC90 luxury SUV enters the new model year without any major changes. The R-Design trim is no longer available on the regular XC90 line and is an XC90 Recharge exclusive. In the packed midsize segment, the XC90 offers a unique look, a comfortable interior with a high-end design, and loads of standard tech features. Volvo offers the XC90 with fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines and in a plug-in hybrid model.

The 2022 Volvo XC90 is available in Momentum and Inscription trims. Prices start at $51,995 (including destination) for the Momentum and go up to $65,695 for the Inscription. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) XC90 Recharge crossover is offered in Inscription Expression, R-Design, and Inscription trims, with prices ranging from $65,895 to $72,195.

Volvo’s lineup of engines for the 2022 XC90 is the same as last year. All models feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, though it’s supercharged with the T6 powertrain and gains an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack in the Recharge.

All three powertrains are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The T6 and Recharge powertrains come with all-wheel drive. The base T5 powertrain comes with front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive being a $2,500 option.

The XC90 is available in two seating configurations. The default arrangement is seating for up to seven across three rows. A six-seat configuration is available, bringing second-row captain’s chairs, but requires the T6 powertrain.

With all of the seats in place, the XC90 offers up to 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space. With the third row folded, the SUV has 41.8 cubic feet of cargo space. In total, the XC90 offers up to 85.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

Every XC90 comes with an extensive list of standard safety features. Automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, automatic high-beam assist, and adaptive cruise control are standard.

The $1,850 Advanced package brings a head-up display and a surround-view parking camera. The Inscription trim is available with Volvo’s Park Assist Pilot system for $1,850.

A nine-inch touchscreen is standard on the XC90. Volvo’s infotainment system includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a wireless charging pad, 10 audio speakers, navigation, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is also included as standard. A Harman Kardon audio system is available for $800. Moving up to the Inscription trim opens the door to a $3,200 Bowers & Wilkins audio system.

The base Momentum trim has plenty of features to satisfy luxury shoppers. On the outside, the trim features 19-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, and a hands-free liftgate. Other standard features include synthetic leather upholstery, quad-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The available Climate package costs $750 and brings heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a headlight cleaning system. For extra performance, Volvo offers the Polestar Performance package that brings updated software for improved engine performance, throttle response, and gearshifts. It costs $1,295.

The Inscription trim ups the luxury quotient with 20-inch wheels, a unique grille, Nappa leather upholstery, illuminated sills, upgraded front seats, as well as heated and ventilated front seats.

Going with the Inscription trim opens the door for the Lounge package. It brings massaging seats and a Nubuck headliner for $1,700. Air suspension is available for $1,800.

The Inscription Expression is the entry-level XC90 Recharge. It comes with a lot of the same features as the Momentum trim but comes with the plug-in hybrid powertrain and standard all-wheel drive.

The XC90 Recharge is available with the same optional features as the non-electrified model.

The R-Design adds 20-inch wheels, a sportier body kit, a unique R-Design grille, metal interior trim, Nappa leather and leatherette upholstery, a sport gear shifter, a sport steering wheel, sport pedals, contoured front seats, and a Harman Kardon audio system over the Inscription Expression.

Over the base Inscription Expression, the Inscription comes with 20-inch wheels, a crystal gear selector, Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, power-adjustable cushion extensions for the front seats, and a Harman Kardon audio system.
